Useful tools!
Aug 27th, 2008 by Lyle Melick
I recently started listening to the Church IT Podcast[1] hosted by Jason Powell. He generally starts the show with a “Cool Tools” segment. Here is my list of cool tools, some from the Podcast, some of my own.
Utilities
SysInternals has some nice “addons” for windows. WinSCP[10] and FileZilla for file transfer. There are a couple of tools that help sort out where your data lives. Overdisk[7] gives you a visual look at your data. So does TreeSize Free from JAM software. We’re using TreeSize Pro at work. Very nice. For file compression and making zip files look at 7-Zip[11] I’m finding that this is handy to create password protected zip files, and the file sizes are smaller with the 7z format. Avoids patent issues that you have with winzip.
AntiVirus
AVG[3] antivirus software. I just started using this at home on some laptops. I’ve been using ClamWin[4], and now there’s a native port of Clam for W32 here. I was using it on my SuSE server, but I think it contributed to a server crash.
Backup
In episode 5[6], there was a great discussion about backups. I’ve ignored that long enough. Great, another task for the todo list…
Remote Control/Access
putty[9]. ’nuff said.
PDF files
I’ve used several PDF print drivers that allow you to create PDF files just by printing. I’ve used PDF Complete, Adobe’s and DocuCom. But my new favorite crush is PrimoPDF[12] from NitroPDF software. We use the NitroPRO for reading and marking up PDF’s at work and it just makes managing PDF files easy. PrimoPDF brings that to the print driver.
2008-08-27 - stopping midway through episode 6. Too tired.
